RMRG Travel Team Fitness 2014

The Rocky Mountain Rollergirls Travel Team skaters are responsible for outside of practice fitness in the 2014 season.  I like working out outside of practice, but I tend to take a “go big or go home” approach and when I take one day off, I give up completely.  I’m going to use this blog to hold myself accountable.

My 2014 Season Goals:

  1. Improve blocking and jamming abilities to contribute the most possible to RMRG and Fight Club/Contenders.
  2. Jam for Fight Club, and not just on the London trip that three other Fight Club jammers can’t attend.
  3. Stay on the Fight Club 20

My 2014 Fitness Goals:

I don’t really know how to write these…

  1. Roller Derby practice 2-3 times per week
  2. Spin Class 1-2 times per week
  3. Insanity/Off Skates Agility 2-3 times per week
  4. Lifting… ???

Congratulations, Menace.

Congratulations, Menace.  You made the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls Contenders.  And those chicks nominated, then unanimously voted you in as their Captain.  Wow.  Remember October 2010, when you started playing Roller Derby?  Remember December 2010, when RMRG had just won WFTDA Nationals and you took this picture after passing your WFTDA Minimum Skills Test and becoming a Castle Rock ‘n Roller?

RMRG seemed pretty far away, remember?  Denver’s roller derby league (you hadn’t heard of the Dolls yet) who’d won Nationals.  By one point.  AJ and Uber Alice had come down to run practices, and they were just soo amazingly awesome and cool.  Remember?

A year later, November 2011.

You played with Castle Rock against RMRG’s Kill Scouts at the Fillmore.  For 15 minutes.  During halftime of an RMRG Contenders vs. Bruising Altitude bout.  Remember seeing those badass skaters take the track?  Remember when they came out to warm up and your jaw dragged across The Fillmore’s floor?  Queen Elizabitch.  Megalops.  Toxic Taunic.  May Q Pay.  Red Die.  Uber Alice. RoboFlow.  She Who.  You screamed and screamed and screamed for Uber Alice, since you knew her and she was your favorite jammer.

And the next day. you attended RMRG Tryouts.  And Frak ignored you, and Megalops hugged you and and Sunny D evaluated you.  And your first RMRG practice–a Thursday Cruelie practice.  Push-Pull carts.  You nearly died of exhaustion.

Remember that girl, Menace?  Remember how cool you thought those Contenders were? Congratulations.  You’re one of them now.  You’re their Captain.  Your dreams came true, look:

Also.  You adore RoboFlow.  She’s beautiful–gorgeous.  With the perfect body and most amazing rear end.  Check out that ^ picture.  It looks like RoboFlow butt, but it isn’t!  Nice work.  (Yeah, I just congratulated myself on my ass.  What?)

January 2013 Challenge

I’m not doing pictures because I literally posted them two weeks ago.  Things haven’t changed much since then, though I’ve been indulging in everything bad for me and it is absolutely catching up at least in terms of how I’ve been feeling (lethargic and bloated with digestive problems to boot. I’ve been so sedentary, I get dizzy when I stand up.)

I’m doing this again.  Why?  I want to form habits.  I want them ingrained in me like second nature.  They aren’t quite there yet.

My “big idea” goals are: improve derby skills, balance my life, maintain weight at 145-150lbs. To achieve these three things, I will:

  1. 50 toe push-ups. 50 sit-ups, and 10,000 steps every day
  2. Actively drink more water
  3. Exercise 6 days per week:
    • Sunday: scrimmage
    • Monday: 2hr league practice, 1hr contenders practice
    • Tuesday: Spin
    • Wednesday: 2hr league practice
    • Thursday: Spin
    • Friday: off
    • Saturday: Body Pump/Body Combat
  4. One “Cooking Light” meal with Tim per week.

Balance is going to be difficult.  I’m so focused on derby, I leave little room for work or my husband, and those two things should come first.  Tim especially.  I enjoy cooking, and started the last TBT off more cooking/eating well than exercising, and I shifted somewhere in the middle.  I want to even everything out this go.  I don’t know if I can do it all, but I’m hopeful.

Oh–also–it is the height of basketball season.  I run the scoreboard for the team at my school, and they have home games 1-2 times per week through January and February.  That will cut into my exercising regime.

And I’m getting back into the swing of things today, but I’m not really starting until Monday, January 7.

Derby Goals

Tonight, Gaygan suggested focusing on three goals.  One Long Term, one Mid-Term, and one Short Term.  Too often we are trying to focus on so many things it gets difficult and takes our focus away.  Well.  At least that’s how I feel.  Here is a list of things I’d like to get better at:

  • Skater Form
  • Endurance
  • Speed
  • Strength
  • 180 degree turn on one foot (both feet)
  • Sideways Skating
  • Backwards Skating (crossovers)
  • Skating wrong direction
  • Ability to consistently jump Apex
  • Use Hips
  • Titty Take Outs
  • Playing well w/ others
  • Penalty Control
  • Being a nice/helpful league mate
  • Attitude (don’t look tired when tired)
  • Using my offense (“friendly side”)
  • Offense
  • Agility/Foot work
  • Make holes
  • Find holes
  • Plug holes
  • … etc

There are a couple of skills I’ve sort of been toying around with lately, and (at least) one skill I’m horribly terribly awful at and just need to focus on to improve.  They are: sideways skating, apex jumping, one leg 180 turning, and hitting with hips.

Sideways skating is fun, and I like to do it during warm up to open my hips up.  Also, I think it is good to help with flippy spinny moves.  But…I think I am okay at it, I just need to practice it here and there.  Also, it’s applications are limited.

Apex jumping.  I did it successfully once (against AJ, no less,) then got new skates and haven’t done it since.  😥  Sad frog.  I want to do it again.  And again.  And again.  Until it is second nature.  I can jump the fuck out of a cone or a stationary body.  Why the fuck is a moving body in a jam different?  Also, I’ve gotten some dumb penalties when I’ve wussed out of Apex jumps.  It’s time.

One foot/leg 180s.  Yeah.  I don’t know what the application is other than AJ did it at regionals and it was totally fucking BA and she looked like a ballerina and who doesn’t want to look like a ballerina?  Riiight?  Seriously, though, I think it might improve my leg strength/agility, and it is something I find myself spending time trying to figure out, so I just went with it.

Hip hits.  I’m a mofo-ing Contender and I can’t hit with my hips to save my life.  This must be ratified.  Immediately.  So:

Short Term Goal: Comfortably Jump Apex in Scrimmage/ Bout consistently.

Mid Term Goal: 1 foot/leg 180 Pirouette-y thing

Long Term Goal: Hit with hips.
