RMRG Travel Team Fitness 2014

The Rocky Mountain Rollergirls Travel Team skaters are responsible for outside of practice fitness in the 2014 season.  I like working out outside of practice, but I tend to take a “go big or go home” approach and when I take one day off, I give up completely.  I’m going to use this blog to hold myself accountable.

My 2014 Season Goals:

  1. Improve blocking and jamming abilities to contribute the most possible to RMRG and Fight Club/Contenders.
  2. Jam for Fight Club, and not just on the London trip that three other Fight Club jammers can’t attend.
  3. Stay on the Fight Club 20

My 2014 Fitness Goals:

I don’t really know how to write these…

  1. Roller Derby practice 2-3 times per week
  2. Spin Class 1-2 times per week
  3. Insanity/Off Skates Agility 2-3 times per week
  4. Lifting… ???

Congratulations, Menace.

Congratulations, Menace.  You made the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls Contenders.  And those chicks nominated, then unanimously voted you in as their Captain.  Wow.  Remember October 2010, when you started playing Roller Derby?  Remember December 2010, when RMRG had just won WFTDA Nationals and you took this picture after passing your WFTDA Minimum Skills Test and becoming a Castle Rock ‘n Roller?

RMRG seemed pretty far away, remember?  Denver’s roller derby league (you hadn’t heard of the Dolls yet) who’d won Nationals.  By one point.  AJ and Uber Alice had come down to run practices, and they were just soo amazingly awesome and cool.  Remember?

A year later, November 2011.

You played with Castle Rock against RMRG’s Kill Scouts at the Fillmore.  For 15 minutes.  During halftime of an RMRG Contenders vs. Bruising Altitude bout.  Remember seeing those badass skaters take the track?  Remember when they came out to warm up and your jaw dragged across The Fillmore’s floor?  Queen Elizabitch.  Megalops.  Toxic Taunic.  May Q Pay.  Red Die.  Uber Alice. RoboFlow.  She Who.  You screamed and screamed and screamed for Uber Alice, since you knew her and she was your favorite jammer.

And the next day. you attended RMRG Tryouts.  And Frak ignored you, and Megalops hugged you and and Sunny D evaluated you.  And your first RMRG practice–a Thursday Cruelie practice.  Push-Pull carts.  You nearly died of exhaustion.

Remember that girl, Menace?  Remember how cool you thought those Contenders were? Congratulations.  You’re one of them now.  You’re their Captain.  Your dreams came true, look:

Also.  You adore RoboFlow.  She’s beautiful–gorgeous.  With the perfect body and most amazing rear end.  Check out that ^ picture.  It looks like RoboFlow butt, but it isn’t!  Nice work.  (Yeah, I just congratulated myself on my ass.  What?)

Play SMARTER. Not HARDER. xo

Food:

  • Honey Nut Cheerios, 1% milk, banana, coffee, sugar free hazelnut creamer
  • greek yogurt w/ fruit and granola (Tim forgot to pack my apple)
  • salad w/ tofu and light southwest lime ranch dressing
  • apple (sigh of relief)
  • Coffee Protein Shake
  • banana
  • WINE.

Exercise:

  • Short Reilly Walk
  • 50 toe pushups
  • 50 crunches (25 regular, 25 v-ups)
  • 2 hr practice
  • 1 hr Yoga w/ Rad Die and my lovely teammates.

Food.  Ate well yesterday.  I survived w/o the apple I normally have for snack mid-day.  It was tough, but I did it.  Then when I got home the first thing I did was ravenously devour an apple out of the fridge.  Whew.  I should have had my banana before Conts practice last night, even though it was more chill than usual.  (I got dizzy/lightheaded during headstands.)

I slept like a champ.  I was nice and relaxed after Yoga and I did my best to maintain that demeanor on my drive home.  Mostly successful.  Small glass of wine before bed.  It took some time to fall asleep, but I did, and I slept like a champ.  (I should start using my fitbit to track my sleep again…)

Yoga.  Wow that was super awesome, and just what the doctor ordered.  Have I mentioned how much I hate being captain, yet?  😦  I really do.  I love it, but I hate it.  I hated turning skaters away last night.  Sure, you don’t have to be a “Sunday” skater to do Yoga after practice, but…  you do to attend a Contenders practice.  Also…  I talked about the stress everyone’s been feeling, lately…  And sure.  The newbs started their eval week, too.  But…  we’ve been at it for three.  And all the scrimmaging for the Hood/Daisy bout…  Last night was for the Contenders and our Project Mayhem guests.  It wasn’t for everyone else.  I have good reasons, but they don’t make me feel any better for turning those other girls away.

And then, I can’t help but wonder what everyone is thinking.  I know some girls are judging that particular use of that time.  I also know it was exactly what those skaters needed.  The ones that came.  And the ones that didn’t.  Well.  You can’t coach part of an athlete, you have to coach the whole athlete.  And sometimes that’s going to mean doing some weird shit at practice to get our mental game/focus on.  They picked me for this job, so they’re just going to have to come around to what that means, and that means yoga here and there at practice, etc.

Besides.  We could have scrimmaged last night, sure.  And yeah, the two evaluators (me & Die) who were there could have seen some good shit.  But.  How much would you all have killed me if we’d done that?  I’d have been pissed off at me.  Not to mention our poor refs.  They’ve had scrimmages two-three nights a week on top of Sats/Suns and a couple of bouts.  They’d have killed me, too.  (Or they just wouldn’t have shown up.  And then we’d really have killed each other.)

So HA.

And I know what you’re all thinking/going to say: I can’t make everyone happy all the time.  I beg to differ.  Yes. I.  Can.

And then…

I feel like writing more, so I’m gonna. Today (Saturday, Prom,) I woke up at 6:30, when I was supposed to get up for 8am Spin, and my throat was sore.  So I thought I’d stay in bed.  Around 7, I got myself up, ate a Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage muffin w/ a half cup of coffee and sugarfree hazelnut creamer.  Went to Spin.

Today was a Kim Spin day.  I thought for a second Bill was subbing for her, and almost hit Body Combat & Body Pump instead–but, he was just attending Kim’s class.  I was so mad at him.  He sat in the corner with his iPod on and didn’t really do what Kim was telling us to do–unless it was sprinting.  Despite being rude…  well… it was just downright inappropriate for one instructor to behave that way in another instructor’s class.  His body language told the world he didn’t respect Kim or her ability as an instructor.  I like Kim.  And I especially like her music.  Her classes are okay?  Good?  I think they’re good.  I like them.

Then my throat really started hurting.  😦  I never really learned to breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth, and when I try to breathe in through my nose,  I feel like I don’t get enough oxygen.  I grew up a swimmer, and swimmer breathe in through their mouths.  Anyway, I tried extra hard today since that was what hurt my throat, but, it was hard.

I love Saturdays, and am enjoying getting back into my routine.  I needed these past few days off of derby.  My mood is certainly improved, and despite the sore throat (which I soothed with a cup of green-chamomile-tea w/ honey) I’m feeling pretty good right now.  I also ate a grapefruit w/ brown sugar (nom nom nom) and a No Bake Energy Bite.  And I did some pretend Yoga.  I haven’t had time lately to stretch out my legs/hips/back, and today I finally did and it was bliss.  🙂  I decided I’m going to have Die run a Cont. practice where we just do Yoga the full hour.  Maybe the 4th, after the Hood/Daisy bout, after evals are over, it will be good for everyone mentally/physically.  (Gotta check w/ Blew first, though.)

Now I think I’m going to take a nap… and read… or catch up on Bones.  I love Tim, but he’s at his friend’s house bottling beer and I’m soooo enjoying some peace and quiet at home.  🙂  Then I’ll have… a chicken salad sandwich?  Chicken and rice?  Something healthy for lunch.  I’m meeting Blew & Vera at Pasquini’s for dinner before Prom.  And then I’m going to try to come strait home from Prom after awards, but apparently I’m parking at Vera’s and we’re riding together and it sounds like it might be kinda far away.  😦  So hopefully everything works out.  I don’t wanna be out too late tonight, and I don’t want to drink.  Really at all.  I need to get my butt home, and then to practice tomorrow.

Train Insane or Remain the Same

Today, I woke early for Spin Class.  I was up and walking Reilly before sunrise (6:30) so that I could make my 8am class and still get to the Ale House for brunch with my derby wife (Feist E One from the Boulder County Bombers) and Alessia (her daughter.)

Spin Class.  Was.  Terrible.  I mean it was bad.  Kill Bill, naturally.  We did a five minute sprint twice, except that the second time he couldn’t tell time and it was only four minutes long.  Suri wondered why a 5 minute sprint is bad.  Pedaling as fast as you can for five minutes.  Nothing else.  First–it’s not challenging.  Second–it’s boring!  And we did it twice! Or at least Bill thinks we did it twice and that’s just as bad.  He kept messing up his timing, telling us we’d do something for a minute, then 48 seconds later telling us we were done.  The worst, though, is that he drones on and on and on about ridiculous republican bullshit forever.  We missed several intervals and over-rested today because of it.  I was super annoyed.  My usual bike was taken today, so I sat in a different one.  Conveniently there was a poll in my line of vision blocking Bill out.  Also, I couldn’t hear his droning as well.  It was sort of Charlie Brown style.  I zoned out for one of our rests/his stories, and he talked so long I got cold!  This was 45 minutes in to the class.  There was no reason for me to be cold.  Ughhh.  He was up there droning on about another instructor telling him not to waste her time–meanwhile I’m sitting there on my bike thinking I wish he wasn’t wasting mine.  Damn.  The thing that really kills me, though, is the 31 miles my bike said I’d ridden (that’s a lot–we did a lot of sprinting) and the fact that my thighs and calves hurt later in the day.  So I guess it wasn’t a total waste.  Still–I can’t wait til Tuesday.  Leslie Spin.  I miss her.

Bill has these sayings.  “Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care–and I care.”  *Vomit.*  Today was: “Train Insane or Remain the Same.”  *Double Vomit.*  I think I’ll start Contenders practice with this quote on Monday.  Hahahahaha.  Yeah right.  I am starting w/ a quote, though.

Anyway, so that.

Food:

  • Honey nut cheerios w/ 1% milk
  • Energy Bite (like 2.5 servings, I think…)
  • Lamb Burger w/ fries, ranch, and beer.
  • Dips (queso, 3 bean, cottage cheese, guacamole…) pot stickers, celery salad… … potato chips…  tortilla chips…  etc.
  • more beer.
  • wine.

Lops made this delicious Celery Salad tonight–it was so sweet too.  She made healthy food because she knew some of the Contenders are on the TBT (our holiday party was tonight.)  I ❤ Lops.  And all the rest of the Cont-ies.  I had a nice night with them tonight.

Cake Pop Glory

Food: 1758

  • Turkey Sausage Muffin, Milk, Coffee, Sugar free Pumpkin Spice Creamer
  • Apple, Greek Yogurt w/ Nature Valley granola and fruit
  • Tim’s Chili, Sour Cream, Cheddar Cheese, Fritos, VitarRain Sport, three Cake Pops
  • Carrots

Exercise:

  • Reilly Walk
  • Derby Practice

So I didn’t eat as much yesterday.  I think the protein in my breakfast kept me full through the morning, and then I was cognizant of the calories in my lunch.  Chili w/ fritos, sour cream, and cheddar cheese.  And three Cake Pops  (Colin’s mom sent Cake Pops as her Monday treat.  OMG.  Delicious.)  So I didn’t eat before practice, just carrots afterward.

Practice was meh.  Its a level-up week, so there were several girls new to Mondays.  Lots of standing around, and some basic drills.  I didn’t get much of a workout in.

Which really isn’t going to bode well for the four cake pops and 0 exercise I’m rocking today…  😦

In other news…  Blew and I are going to be Contenders Captains.  Yay!  And Rad Die…  … well.  *Blushes.*  Rad Die was asking me about my derby wife.  So I jokingly asked if that was a proposition, to which Die said “just wondering.”  So I told her all about my Feist E. One and… and…  and…  well Die said too bad and…  well then we talked some more and I asked if she was courting me and she said yes.  *BLUSHING PROFUSELY.*  o.m.g.  Don’t tell anyone.

Soo… needless to say I’m having a pretty good day.  😀
