One Word

“One Word”
Kelly Osbourne

One word breaks the code of silence,
Silence tells me all I need to know.
One Word,
One Word, tells me everything I need to know.

One world driven in to madness,
Madness driven by the depths below.
One Word,
One Word, tells me everything I need to know

It’s not the way that I want it,
It’s just the way that I need it.
Day after day
It’s not the way that I want it,
It’s just the way that I need it.
Day after day

One lie tells a thousand stories,
The greatest stories that were ever told.
One Lie,
One Lie, tells the greatest stories ever told.

One man can predict the future,
a future journey in to outer space.
One Man,
One Man, a future journey in to outer space.

If you really want more, scream it out louder

“If you really want more, scream it out louder”

This is my Derby Jam. ¬†I had Batty and Scream play it when I did my 20 laps, I play it before every bout, and it usually comes on my iPod when I’m merging from I-225 to I-70 on the way to practice. ¬†I really started listening to it when I made Contenders. ¬†I was worried I’d screw up that opportunity, so I just kept telling myself to work at it. ¬†If you really want more, scream it out louder. ¬†Get on the floor, bring out the fire. ¬†Light it up, take it up higher.

I also like the second part of the first verse–“Know you’ve been patiently waiting, I know you need me, I can feel it, I’m a beast, I’m an animal, I’m that monster in the mirror, the headliner, finisher, closer, winner, best when under pressure with seconds left I show up.” ¬†If you just read the lyrics and look at what a cock Usher is, he’s talking about how he’s so awesome at dancing. ¬†But for me, it means this opportunity was meant for me. ¬†And here I am, and I’m not gonna let anyone down. ¬†And the last part there, I always look at Fight Club winning WFTDA Nationals in 2010. ¬†One point. ¬†Frida Beater. ¬†Sure, that was everyone’s victory. ¬†But, Frida totally could have fucked that up. ¬†She didn’t. ¬†She secured a win. ¬†I always wonder what would happen to me in a similar situation. ¬†I think I would crack under pressure. ¬†So singing these lyrics at myself, constantly telling myself I’m the finisher, is my way of preparing myself for the event my team needs a tight victory and I’m on the line. ¬†(It almost happened at the Fillmore DRD bout, but Alpha pulled me and put other skaters in instead. It did happen at Sac City, but I was blocking, not jamming, so not the same.)

“More” by Usher

“Watch me as I dance under the spotlight-
listen to the people screaming out more, and more
Cos I create the feeling that keep em coming back,
Yeah, I create the feeling that keep em coming back,
So captivating when I get it on the floor.

Know y’all been patiently waiting, I know you need me, I can feel it,
I’m a beast, I’m an animal, I’m that Monster in the mirror,
The headliner, finisher, I’m the closer, winner.
Best when under pressure with seconds left I show up.

If you really want more, scream it out louder,
if you on the floor, bring out the fire,
And light it up, take it up higher,
Gonna push it to the limit, give it more.

Get up both your hands, I’m in the zone, s’aite
put em in the air, if you more (and) more,
Cos I can’t wait to feel it.
I go hard, can’t stop,
But if I stop just know that Imma bring it back,
Never quittin’ don’t believe in that.

Know y’all been patiently waiting, I know you need me, I can feel it,
I’m a beast, I’m an animal, I’m that monster in the mirror,
The headliner, finisher, I’m the closer, winner.
Best when under pressure with seconds left I show up.

If you really want more, scream it out louder,
if you on the floor, bring out the fire,
And light it up, take it up higher,
Gotta push it to the limit, give it more.

Gotta push it to the limit, give it more..

If you really want more, scream it out louder,
if you on the floor, bring out the fire,
And light it up, take it up higher,
Gotta push it to the limit, give it more.

Gotta push it to the limit, give it more..

Gotta push it to the limit, give it more.”

Derby Goals

Tonight, Gaygan suggested focusing on three goals. ¬†One Long Term, one Mid-Term, and one Short Term. ¬†Too often we are trying to focus on so many things it gets difficult and takes our focus away. ¬†Well. ¬†At least that’s how I feel. ¬†Here is a list of things I’d like to get better at:

  • Skater Form
  • Endurance
  • Speed
  • Strength
  • 180 degree turn on one foot (both feet)
  • Sideways Skating
  • Backwards Skating (crossovers)
  • Skating wrong direction
  • Ability to consistently jump Apex
  • Use Hips
  • Titty Take Outs
  • Playing well w/ others
  • Penalty Control
  • Being a nice/helpful league mate
  • Attitude (don’t look tired when tired)
  • Using my offense (“friendly side”)
  • Offense
  • Agility/Foot work
  • Make holes
  • Find holes
  • Plug holes
  • … etc

There are a couple of skills I’ve sort of been toying around with lately, and (at least) one skill I’m horribly terribly awful at and just need to focus on to improve. ¬†They are: sideways skating, apex jumping, one leg 180 turning, and hitting with hips.

Sideways skating is fun, and I like to do it during warm up to open my hips up. ¬†Also, I think it is good to help with flippy spinny moves. ¬†But…I think I am okay at it, I just need to practice it here and there. ¬†Also, it’s applications are limited.

Apex jumping. ¬†I did it successfully once (against AJ, no less,) then got new skates and haven’t done it since. ¬†ūüė• ¬†Sad frog. ¬†I want to do it again. ¬†And again. ¬†And again. ¬†Until it is second nature. ¬†I can jump the fuck out of a cone or a stationary body. ¬†Why the fuck is a moving body in a jam different? ¬†Also, I’ve gotten some dumb penalties when I’ve wussed out of Apex jumps. ¬†It’s time.

One foot/leg 180s. ¬†Yeah. ¬†I don’t know what the application is other than AJ did it at regionals and it was totally fucking BA and she looked like a ballerina and who doesn’t want to look like a ballerina? ¬†Riiight? ¬†Seriously, though, I think it might improve my leg strength/agility, and it is something I find myself spending time trying to figure out, so I just went with it.

Hip hits. ¬†I’m a mofo-ing Contender and I can’t hit with my hips to save my life. ¬†This must be ratified. ¬†Immediately. ¬†So:

Short Term Goal: Comfortably Jump Apex in Scrimmage/ Bout consistently.

Mid Term Goal: 1 foot/leg 180 Pirouette-y thing

Long Term Goal: Hit with hips.

Hooooray Beer!

Food: 3100 Calories.  Woot Woot

  • 1hr Body Combat
  • 1hr Body Pump

So. ¬†I accidentally showed up for Body Combat at the Rec Center instead of Body Pump. ¬†I read the schedule wrong. ¬†Fortunately the teacher was Leslie, who I adore, and she assured me I’d be just fine, so I stayed for the class. ¬†Interesting. ¬†It’s like boxing the air. ¬†And shuffling left and right. ¬†And there was this short, older, wider man, who apparently takes the class all the time (or maybe he used to actually box?) and he felt the need to explain to me how to be successful in Body Combat at the end of the class… ¬†(Meanwhile, I was watching everyone in the mirror. ¬†Let’s just say it was a Cardio class and he didn’t really get any cardio in…) ¬†There were a couple of dudes of a similar ilk who thought they knew everything, but mostly the class was filled with very fit females punching and kicking the shit out of the air. ¬†I sweat a lot. ¬†It was cool. ¬†Glad I stayed.

Directly after Body Combat, Leslie taught Body Pump. ¬†Lifting. ¬†I hate that class. ¬†I don’t really sweat at all, and I’m not really sure what my weight limits should be, so I end up all wrong. ¬†For example, I didn’t have nearly enough weight on for the back circuit, so it was really easy. ¬†But then I had wayyy too much for the Tricep circuit and nearly died. ¬†Biceps were hard, too, but probably close to where they should be (read: I need to toughen up.) ¬†My arms and shoulders hurt today.

I usually like Saturday morning spin, but yesterday was Sue’s class. ¬†I don’t think Sue is the crazy Marimba lady, I think she is the easy hour and fifteen minute pyramid lady. ¬†Either way, I was happy to skip for a Leslie class. ¬†(I feel a bit like a stalker. ¬†But I don’t care.) ¬†Also, I did derby, derby, spin, derby, spin, rest this week. ¬†I needed a lifting day, as much as I hate it. ¬†And I think Body Combat was a good cardio workout for me that wasn’t Spin. ¬†The one disappointing bit is that I didn’t get that many steps out of it (for Fitbit.) ¬†So I didn’t hit 10,000 steps yesterday. ¬†Oh well. ¬†I also did not walk Reilly yesterday. ¬†(I had planned to, but Snow & Beer got in the way.)

After class, I starved myself til my lunch date w/ Feist E. ¬†I knew I’d be eating a lot yesterday, and I wasn’t that hungry, so I just held off eating. ¬†Isn’t it weird how working out makes it so you need to eat and are hungry, but sort of a… ¬†maintainable hungry? ¬†Like an “I don’t have to eat right away, but I’m fucking starving” hungry? ¬†I dunno. ¬†Maybe I’m weird. ¬†But when I’m having a lazy day and I get hungry, I stuff my face. ¬†Exercise-y days I can hold off. ¬†Anyway. ¬†Lunch with Feist E. ¬†That was awesome. ¬†Miss her. ¬†My derby wife looks just like a Super Model. ¬†Every time I see her, I can’t help but think how beautiful she is. ¬†She also used to skate for the Castle Rock ‘n Rollers, but now skates for the Boulder Bombers. ¬†It’s cool that I still get to see her, and we still have so much to talk about despite being in very different places in life (she’s a mama) and on very different derby leagues.

A quick note–I had a Skinny Margarita¬†that was very good and tasted almost just like Feist E’s regular marg. ¬†It substituted Soda Water for Sweet and Sour. ¬†So it was: Tequila, Triple Sec, lots of Lime juice, and soda water. ¬†It was a bit fizzy which was cool, too.

Then I went to Tim’s friend Brian’s house where they were brewing beer. ¬†I don’t get it. ¬†It’s his man time, but he wanted me to come watch. ¬†It was sweet. ¬†And freezing. ¬†We were outside. ¬†And it was snowing. ¬†Brrr… ¬†Anyway, this was Tim & Brian’s fourth batch of beer, a Honey Porter. ¬†And today we tried the first bottles of their first brew, but I forget what it was… ¬†It was tasty, though. ¬†They are calling their “brewery” “High Steel” because Brian likes the Broncos and Tim likes the Steelers. ¬†I’m glad I got to try Tim’s first beer at it’s first tasting. ¬†(I have this fantasy that he and Brian will make it big with their beer and I’ll make it big writing… somehow…) ¬†So it was cool to be there at the beginning of it. ¬†Anyway, I was glad to have been there, but I hope they don’t want me to come again because it was soooo cold and I had so many errands to run yesterday that didn’t get done. ¬†Plus I really needed a nap, and ended up falling asleep at 8pm (which I also did Friday night.) ¬†Lame.

Blogging Tips for my ladies: Sunny & Rowdy READ, damn it. (Don’t worry, they’re from someone who knows shit, not me.)

Hi All,

So Dosa pointed out a few weeks ago that some of us are falling of the bandwagon. ¬†That’s fair. ¬†It’s been a long 70ish days, and this shit is getting old, right? ¬†I enjoy writing these blogs in the morning. ¬†They’ve become part of my routine that I enjoy with my morning coffee.

So while I understand it’s been a long haul that’s almost over…I have no problem blogging in the morning and have been trying to come up with things I can write about during non TBT months. ¬†Poop is definitely high on the list. ¬†And wine. ¬†(Anyone have other ideas?)

Anyway, I read this blog.  This woman started one blog, then became a Professional Blogger w/ 6 Blogs she writes/edits, etc.  (How fucking BA would that be?) and these are her 11 Blogging Tips.

Anyway, two that apply to us: #4: Be You! ¬†and #11: Keep it Fun! ¬†Ladies, we’re almost there. ¬†Hang in there, and try to have fun with your Blogs. ¬†Sunny, you’re the fucking shit. ¬†Hang in there, and make that blog something fun to write about! ¬†And Rowdy–if entering calories into MyFitnessPal is sucking the life out of you (my words, not Rowdy’s,) it’s okay to stop. ¬†Make it fun for these last 20 days. ¬†We’re so close.

And to those of you I’m not calling out, if you’re struggling too: hang in there. ¬† Keep it fun. ¬†And for Newt who’s just starting–make it fun, lady, so you stick with it.

‚̧ Mean@$$

PS: Ideas on topics I could move forward writing about after TBT are encouraged comments to this post.  For anyone reading this.  Thanks!

Stuff and Things

It’s Friday so I’m not being real productive. ¬†I’m looking at my Fitbit weight stats. ¬†I have the Fitbit Aria which is a badass scale that takes my weight and body fat percentage and transmits it wirelessly to my Fitbit account. It measures my Body Fat % by… I don’t know. ¬†Anyway, it’s been in the mid-twenties, then yesterday it dropped to 17.9% and today to 17.6%. ¬†Which should be fine, right? ¬†But the “low” end of healthy is 18.5%.¬†But… ¬†well. ¬†I feel healthy, right? ¬†And I eat over 1500 calories a day, so I should be just fine, right? Couple this w/ my 24hr menses and I’m just wondering things….

Here’s an article about how Fitbit measures body fat percentages. ¬†It doesn’t seem to be endorsed by Fitbit, but I still don’t trust it.

In other news, here’s a graph of my weight through the year:

I’m only down 7.6 since January, but 13.5 since starting TBT (ish). ¬†(Apparently I was packing an extra 5-7 lbs. or so all summer… no surprise there.) ¬†Here’s a link to My Fitbit Stats.

How to Lose It (by Menace)

Disclaimer: I’m a ‘lil tipsy and I ‚̧ on everyone when in this state…

So. ¬†Everyone keeps commenting on how “thin” and “fit” I look. ¬†I shall commence tooting my own horn:

  • Rad Die: “Menace have you lost weight?”
  • Menace: “meh… a little”
  • Rad Die: “You’re looking really fit…”
  • Menace: “I lost an inch and a half on my waist, but that’s about it…”
  • Rad Die: “Are you sure? ¬†Your arms look thinner too”
  • Menace: “Oh. Yeah. I lost a half inch on each…”
  • Rad Die: “And your back, your spine is really defined, etc”

I ‚̧ Rad Die. ¬†She keeps to herself, and sometimes comes off as harsh, but I ‚̧ Rad Die. ¬†She’ll call me on my shit, and tell me I’m doing good when I am. ¬†Which makes her compliments all the more valuable. ¬†And she will be there for me any time I need her. ¬†Once, I hurt myself at USPS vs Conts scrimmage. ¬†Know who picked me up? ¬†Rad Die.

  • KB: “You’ve lost some weight, haven’t you?”
  • Me: “Yeah, a little”
  • KB: “You’re looking really fit, your waist is really thin” ¬†Etc.

*KB is a work friend.

Nona also said something last night. ¬†And someone else. ¬†I don’t remember who (Tia?) ¬†I get embarrassed. ¬†I don’t think I’ve lost that much… ¬†Fitbit says 11.8 since January. ¬†I think I’m a ‘lil over 10lbs for the TBT duration. ¬†So, I thought I should post some “Menace’s Weight Lost Tips” ¬†here for review, and then if they’re as funny as I think they might be… er… useful as I think they might be, I’ll share them elsewhere. ¬†Ahem.

  1. Stop eating Pizza Rolls 1-2x/ week.  (Verdict out on baked Chicken Nuggets, though they should likely also be avoided)
  2. No McDonalds (or other fast food)
  3. Suck it up and go to the fucking gym
  4. Fiber = poop.  You do the math.
  5. Coffee & Sugarfree creamer over Triple Shot Venti Pumpkin Spice Late w/ sprinkles and extra whip
  6. Anything goes into a smoothie. ¬†It will still be delicious. ¬†It’s the mystery casserole of fruit and veggies, and it’s delicious.
  7. QUINOA!
  8. Go to Roller Derby Practice Sunday 11am.  Chicken Wing Dip, beer, and other extra calories averted.
  9. Yoga helps keep things aligned (but so does Dr. Boreman.  Combo = bonus.)
  10. Walk the dog.  Literally.  10,000 steps a day, baby.

When things get tough, give up.

Just kidding. ¬†That’s something I tell students sometimes. ¬†They complain that things are hard, so I say: well. ¬†you should probably give up, then. ¬†if it’s hard. ¬†you know, like, when you want to get a job, and the first place doesn’t hire you? ¬†give up. ¬†when you want a date for prom, and the first girl says no? ¬†give up. ¬†etc, etc, etc. ¬†I’m using this new thing called sarcasm when I do that. ¬†It’s where you say the opposite of what you really mean to prove a point.

Anyway, we’re halfway through this TBT business. ¬†Lots of us have already dropped like flies, and the rest of us are getting sick, busy, etc. ¬†For me, looking at my caloric intake the past few days/weeks… I’m over nearly every day. ¬†I have about 3lbs left to lose to reach that 150 goal. ¬†And sure, I said 150ish… ¬†but what if I could hit 150, a healthy 150, and keep myself there? ¬†That would be pretty fucking cool. ¬†Plus people like Rad Die and the Power Weights teacher at school have noticed my fit-ness, and it’s definitely encouraging.

However… that last 3lbs… ¬†that’s the hardest. ¬†That last 10%. ¬†Right? ¬†And I’ve had these busy weeks and not kept to my plan. ¬†So now what? ¬†Give up? ¬†No. ¬†Definitely not. ¬†Gotten this far, keep pushing myself to see where I can get. ¬†And sure, it will be extra hard. ¬†I’m busy. ¬†Derby season is over. ¬†The RMRG LOA list is already pages long. ¬†Why keep going? ¬†What’s pushing me? ¬†I don’t even know. ¬†It’s just that last time I dropped out after 2weeks and this time I’ve made it this far. ¬†And I’ve been feeling better. ¬†And if I can stick it out, I’ll feel so much less guilty about all those December treats that are coming my way. ¬†I also have that weeklong trip to Grand Cayman w/ my family. ¬†Fortunately: my mom will be there so I’ll have some motivation to exercise (she will every day.) ¬†Conversely, alcohol, treats, etc, etc, etc. ¬†I may add a week to my TBT to make up for that week. ¬†We’ll see.

Also: my abs. ¬†I want Bijou abs. ¬†Mine sort of look like they’ve had a stroke. ¬†One side is wider than the other, and higher up. ¬†A result of no gallblader, I think. ¬†The one side is all wilty. ¬†Anyway, they’re getting there. ¬†They are sort of defined. ¬†I’ve still got a bit of fat store on the lower part of my belly, so I don’t look like some kind of man-woman yet. ¬†And my thighs. ¬†I’m getting cycling thighs. ¬†Which is interesting.

So–today. ¬†I will walk Reilly. ¬†Ugh. ¬†In this horrible horrible weather. ¬†I might do some Yoga. ¬†But that’s probably all. ¬†However, tomorrow. ¬†Tomorrow I will go to Spin Class, I may Body Pump, I will bout, and I will double practice it Sunday. ¬†I will go to practice Monday, Tuesday maybe a repeat of the Leslie Spin, practice Wednesday, Spin Thursday? ¬†Friday off? ¬†We’ll see how it goes, but ladies: it’s time to get back on track and finish this shit out. ¬†Five weeks left. ¬†Let’s make ’em count. ¬†Let’s make those first seven weeks worth it.
